The Australian Space Awards, a gala black-tie event, was set to be held at the Four Seasons Hotel in Sydney on 26 March 2020.
Space Connect – part of the leading market intelligence business Momentum Media – created the awards program to showcase the nation’s best and brightest space businesses and professionals.
In rescheduling the event to later in 2020, Space Connect has undertaken guidance from government and health agencies as the nation grapples with the evolving coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis.

“We’re committed to delivering this awards program for the nation’s space sector, with the actual event to be now held later in the year,” said Momentum Media’s William Magee, head of strategy – defence and aerospace.
The Australian Space Awards is a first for Australia and an important milestone as the nation realises its potential in space.
“We have been closely monitoring the statements and guidelines from local, state and federal health agencies on COVID-19, leading us to reschedule the physical event to a later date,” he said.
“We have concluded the judging process, the trophies are created and we are ready to unveil the winners at the event when it takes place. In the interim, we’ve got time and inspiration to tell the stories of our very capable finalists across all categories.

“Over the coming months we’ll highlight the secrets of our finalists’ successes, uncover the untold narratives around their growth and origin, how they are leading innovation while profiling organisations to support their business growth.
“This is an emerging sector, with so many talented people and businesses. It’s a privilege for us to host this awards program and have the opportunity to deep dive into our finalists’ stories.”
Magee said that as soon as a new date was locked in, Space Connect would notify award guests, ensuring sufficient time to organise calendars and prepare for the event.
“We advised all our finalists and event guests last week that the awards would be rescheduled. The feedback we’ve had has been outstanding. While our finalists, partners and guests were disappointed that the event would not take place until later in the year, universally there is excitement around the awards program and I look forward to getting together in person with friends and colleagues from across the space sector when we host the rescheduled event,” he said.
Magee pointed in particular to the backing of principal partner KBR plus the program’s supporting partners, the Australian Space Agency and the Space Industry Association of Australia (SIAA).
“Our partners have been central to our ability to launch the Australian Space Awards and garner so much interest from across the entire space sector. I thank them for their ongoing support and we collectively look forward to delivering the event later in the year,” he said.
“I’d also like to express my gratitude to our judging panel for their professionalism, energy and time in assessing all of our finalists’ submissions and undertaking the very difficult task of determining the winner in each category.
“While this is not the start we expected for a new national awards program, the Australian Space Awards will firm its position as the benchmark for excellence in the bourgeoning space sector. I look forward to seeing you all at the event later this year. Per aspera ad astra.”
