Saber secures $2m automation deal with US Space Force

Stephen Kuper

Sydney-based Saber Astronautics has secured a US$1.2 million (AU$1.9 million) contract from the US Space Force to develop automation systems for the service’s space operations.

The initiative, called “Windu”, aims to streamline the many tasks involved in space traffic management and mission defence.

This development comes as the space industry experiences unprecedented growth. Since 2019, the number of spacecraft in orbit has surged, with projections indicating nearly 80,000 new satellites by 2032. Many current processes remain manual, requiring subject matter experts to monitor space and task sensors to identify potential issues on orbit.

Saber describes Windu as a “Digital Guardian” designed to automate the collection of evidence for critical events affecting flight safety. This significantly enhances the productivity of individual operators, allowing them to focus on decision making rather than routine monitoring tasks.

Nathan Parrott, director of Saber Astronautics USA, said, “Windu will bring balance to the Space Force. As operators, we spend countless hours piecing together the right tools and data to analyse potential space threats. Windu simplifies this by instantly identifying the relevant information for each event, delivering insights far quicker than a human can achieve alone. It’s a game changer for space operations.”

Windu will be hosted on Saber’s flagship platform, Space Cockpit, a widely used Space Battle Management System employed by thousands of operators globally.

Dr Jason Held, CEO of Saber Astronautics, highlighted the importance of this innovation, saying, “Space operations are at a critical juncture. The pace of orbital activity is accelerating and the stakes have never been higher. Windu equips operators with the tools to stay ahead of threats, make faster decisions and focus on their missions. This is about more than just technology – it’s about empowering the people responsible for keeping space safe for everyone.”

Space Cockpit is a comprehensive space battle management solution deployed across classified networks, enabling the US Space Force to maintain real-time space domain awareness. It supports multiple units, including the 1st Space Operations Squadron, the 45th Space Wing, the National Space Defence Center and allied partners.

Additionally, Space Cockpit hosts the Space Applications Marketplace, the first and only platform for third-party developers to sell applications directly to the US Department of Defense. This unique feature underscores Saber’s commitment to fostering innovation and collaboration in the rapidly evolving space domain.
