Kim given first ISS mission

A SEAL, medical doctor and astronaut floats into the International Space Station and the crew lead says, “Hi Jonny Kim.”

NASA astronaut Jonny Kim has been given his first International Space Station mission, being assigned as a flight engineer on the upcoming Expedition 72/73.

While in orbit, Kim will be expected to undertake research that will help ready future crew members for their time in space.

Kim will spend approximately eight months onboard the ISS, alongside Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Ryzhikov and Alexey Zubritsky, NASA has confirmed.

He is expected to launch on the Roscosmos Soyuz MS-27 in March 2025.

Kim has previously served as a Navy SEAL and received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, completing his internship with the Emergency Medicine Residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

In 2023 he also became a naval aviator, completing his advanced helicopter training course.
